Return from the Thing!

I had a fun ol’ time at the London Thing last Saturday. After the agonizingly slow start me, Gould, and Joel (who appeared to be cosplaying as a luchadore bank manager) got into the groove. We were also sharing the table with theses awesome Sugar Skull badges Joel’s sister makes, I love those things. If we’re back next year we should totally have a Mexican Day of Dead theme on the table!

It’s nice to be able to pick up comics from the cartoonists themselves without having to wade through a shambling group of slack jawed Joker nurses. I didn’t take any photos because I prefer to save space on my camera memory card for more important London sights like the filled in crack at the Tate Modern (which I find strangely hilarious) but there’s a nice con report with pics on The Super Comics Adventure Squad Blog.

And now here’s links to some of the cool stuff I bought.

Watch out London!

There's plenty of good reasons to go to this year's UK Web and Mini-Comics Thing:

Sarah McIntyre
Meredith Gran
John Allison
Kate Beaton
Roger freakin Langridge

And a whole host of others. I, however, am not that great a reason to go but if you're there anyway you might as well pop by and say hello. Me, Gould, and some other guy called Joel (I've never met him but I'm sure he's very nice) have a table and if you feel the need to stimulate my economy a little you can buy some short poorly photocopied comics.

A sampler of some of my work with the fine people of The Action Age. It'll feature the first part of The Chronicles of Solomon Stone before any where else ever if this excites you.

Also joining with fellow member of The Royal Society for the Preservation of Sub-Literature Prfs. Samual Bridgett I will help in reconstructing some forgotten tomes from the past.

So come to the UK Web and Mini-Comics Thing and watch a guy with receding hair feel like a bit of a worthless fraud when surrounded by his betters...

Believe it!

Wishing you an extreme Christmas

Because celebrating Christmas on the day it occurs is for losers.

I can't come up with a decent stone pun...

Coming at some point from Action Age Comics!
The Chronicles of Solomon Stone!

Some of you may be wondering how I got such a prime gig like this, well the answer's simple. I've been a fan of Mr Sims' Blog for few years now and then one day he beat me up in an alley and carved his name backwards into my forehead...

This is pretty common practice in the comics industry. I believe it was Stan Lee who first originated the concept back in the Marvel bull-pen.

The Erotic Adventures of Smithy

It amuses me to think of the people I know who were totally dreading clicking on that title in their feed readers...

A while back I had a go at drawing a short porn comic purely to see if I could. I only got two pages into it and it's been laying around my room for a while now so I thought I'd colour it up. The comic itself is a pretty tame affair, I just don't have it in me to be a smut merchant.

Here are the two panes which I'm happiest with during my brief attempt to become a pornographer.

Buh-buh-buh-Bristol 2008

Yes in a just month's time me and the gang will be at The Bristol Comics Convention. As nothing particularly horrific happened last time we'll have a table again where you'll be able to buy our stuff, if any of them have any stuff this year that is, you'll have to ask them -

Chris G
Andy Silver
Zak Symmonds-Hurn
Rob 'The Rascal' Garrett

Photobucket

I'll have copies of my new rambling, incoherent, and more than a little whiny mini-comic Alpha Waves for sale (provided I finish it in time) and, in the unlikely event that someone email's me requesting a particular piece, some prints.

So come and say hi before moving onto Kate and Paul's table to steal their smarties.

Life with Friends: Short Story

Photobucket

Over on his blog, TwoFold Comics editor Adam Williams has the short story prequel I drew a little while back to the Life with Friends series.

I'm not completey sure what's going on with the actual series at the moment but there's some design work I did here.

Vichama comin' at'cha!

Photobucket

The much delayed Vichama part 3 (or Emergency Program One if you prefer) by myself and Eddie the Rey is now available to be read online in Sonic the Comic Online no: 245 (Rob' The Rascal' Garrett also did me a solid with this great cover).

The unlettered version is available on DA as per usual.

Recent fanart

Clickee makee the bigger.

Cameron from Terminator - The Sarah Jane Adventures. I'm not too certain on the series at the moment but there was a really sweet promotional photo (this one) of the cast in this month's SFX.

I didn't have any reference for the skull so that may be a bit off. Also I overplayed the texture, but it would have looked really dull otherwise.

A comics adaptation of a song/music video/film, which is woefully pretentious (even for me), but I had some stuff to try out and this seemed the best way.

The backgrounds were traced in photoshop, but they're photos I took so I'm not a complete hack/thief.

Yet.

Fanart for FreakAngels which I enjoy.

Tried something new (with a bit of a Cerebus infuence) for the orignal black and blue piece and then decided to colour it.

People probably won't get who the kid in the picture is a reference to.

Oort and Kuiper

I really don't use this blog very much.

Crossing Midnight Intrigue!

So a few years ago I made some mini-comics for the Bristol Comic-con on the subject of Enjo Kosai (Colour digital versions here here here here and here, and yes they are a little cheesy in places, not to mention some awful artwork, but I was young, well slightly younger...). Mostly I just gave them to people who's stuff I liked. Years pass and as one in roughly five people who read Mike Carey's Crossing Midnight I had a look at the solicitation for August when DC put them up and saw this -

CROSSING MIDNIGHT #10
Written by Mike Carey
Art by Eric Nguyen
Cover by J.H. Williams III
Beginning a new storyline with guest art by Eric Nguyen (SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE)! Having arrived in Tokyo, Kai falls in with the enjokosai — middle- to high-school-age girls who go on dates for money. No sex is required, and in Japan, it’s completely legal. But a supernatural slasher is voicing disapproval in the bloodiest ways imaginable…
On sale August 22 • 32 pg,
FC, $2.99 US • MATURE READERS

Well one of the people I gave a mini-comic to was, yes, Mike Carey. Now it's pretty unlikely that he remembers it (I doubt anyone actually read those things), and I'd assume that he just found the information while researching the culture, but just maybe I influenced a Vertigo storyline, and that'd be pretty cool!

Please note: I'm not accusing Mike Carey of stealing my intellectual property or anything equally silly as they were meant to be educational, plus I'm not sure why anyone would want to steal those ideas in the first place.

Full report after I've gone to my local comics emporium in a few weeks.
